I reached Kyelang in the evening when the sun had started to bid goodbye and was on the way to its next destination. Just like me! Thanks to my quest for unplanned trips, I hadn’t booked any hotel. It wasn’t the time to search for accommodations online. So, the only way was to knock on every door available. Moreover, I just had to spend a day in Kyelang (also spelled as Keylang or Keylong), and the day was already embracing the dark.
While traveling to a new place, there are certain challenges. Suitable accommodation is one of them. Since I keep visiting Shangarh quite often, I know some good places where I can stay without any problem. For me, Kyelang was a stoppage on the way to Jispa. And there, too, I didn’t stay. Visiting Jispa was more of a I have seen you, and I will be back for you! trip for me. I only spent a couple of hours there.
Where to Stay for a Day in Kyelang
I must have checked with four or five hotels. Some didn’t have decent rooms, some didn’t have decent tariffs, and some didn’t match the price with vibes. Well, it was a challenge. I invited myself. I could have already booked but didn’t and chose to go and search there. An hour of my first day in Kyelang was just spent trying to find a good hotel, not far from the market and not too costly (considering I was going to stay for a day in Kyelang only).
So, after a lot of research and rejecting some properties in Kyelang, I decided to crash my night at Gyespa Hotel and Restaurant. Does Gyespa sound like Jispa? It does to me. So, Gyespa Hotel is located on the main market road of Kyelang, and that was the thing I liked. You could easily move around and come back at night without getting lost. Once I got lost in Shangarh when I was staying at Snowline Homestay.
The hotel was decent and had a small garden in the backyard with views of the mighty Himalayan mountains. An attached washroom which was not high enough for a guy like me. Two bedside tables with charging points on both sides were such a relief. The night was starry, and the mountaintop looked like it had a crown full of stars shining like diamonds. I tried a lot to capture them, but unfortunately, my poor phone couldn’t handle it. So, it only exists in my memories.
Where to Eat in Kyelang
Kyelang has lots of local cafes, dhabas, and restaurants. This small town has a bustling market where you can shop and eat. After checking in at the hotel and relaxing for a while, I walked out to explore the local area. The market is full of quick bite shops and several other establishments which offer a range of both vegetarian and nonvegetarian cuisines. So, you won’t have any problem if you are planning for a day in Kyelang.
After resting for a bit in the evening, I headed to the market and found a sweet shop. I saw fresh samosas and couldn’t resist (you will know it only if you are a samosa lover). It was both a confectionary store where you could buy sweets, savories, beverages, cakes, etc. A one-stop solution to your everyday needs. The owner seemed like a humble guy. I saw yellowish cheese for the first time in my life. When I asked him about it, he gave me a tiny piece to taste and told me the cheese was from local cows.
I ordered samosa with chholey and then jalebi after it. I even got a few pieces of a couple of sweets packed for the night. Just that I couldn’t resist. For dinner in Kyelang, I found this decent restaurant called Dekyid. It is located just at the end of the road. Hotel Dekyid has a large building, so it can be easily visible. The restaurant of Hotel Dekyid looked interesting from the inside, so I planned to have dinner there. After having two samosas with chholey and jalebi, my tummy didn’t have enough space. So, I ordered veg biryani. The restaurant has some French guests (if I am not wrong) sitting in a group, and I assume it even had outdoor seating.
After dinner, I headed to a garment shop to buy undergarments. After spending some time there, I realized they didn’t have as per my size. I checked out from the hotel the next day and left for Jispa.
