Two Days in Chitkul: A Himalayan Retreat of Tranquility

Chitkul, a name that lingered on my travel wishlist for quite some time, beckoned with promises of pristine beauty and tranquility. Captivated by the countless Instagram posts and immersive travel blogs on Chitkul, I found myself yearning to experience the magic of this Himalayan village. However, the challenge lay in its remoteness, requiring more than just a casual weekend getaway. Being a weekend traveler, constrained by the demands of my job, the prospect of reaching Chitkul from Delhi, a daunting 570 kilometers away, seemed like a distant dream. The logistics demanded a dedicated one and a half days merely for the journey, leaving little time to truly immerse myself in the enchantment of Chitkul. Yet, there comes a moment when wanderlust overrides practicalities, and the desire to explore triumphs over the constraints of time. The day finally arrived when I embraced the journey, setting aside two precious days to unravel the secrets of Chitkul. The anticipation of what lay ahead fueled my excitement as I embarked on this Himalayan odyssey. As the wheels set in motion and the landscapes transformed, the anticipation of spending two days in Chitkul fueled my excitement.

Chitkul entered the scope of my wanderlust during a comprehensive two-week exploration of the mystical landscapes of Himachal Pradesh. The journey commenced with a day of soaking in the colonial charm of Shimla, a delightful prelude to the adventures that awaited. As the dawn of the next day broke, I embarked on a scenic bus journey to Reckong Peo, immersing myself in the breathtaking vistas that Himachal Pradesh is renowned for. A day and night in Peo allowed me to absorb the local culture and recharge for the impending escapade. Eager to embrace the allure of Chitkul, I secured a cab for the winding roads, an investment of 2500 INR that promised the gateway to Himalayan serenity. And so began the unfolding tale of how, against the odds of time and distance, I managed to carve out a captivating chapter of my two days in Chitkul.

In the midst of this Himalayan adventure, the urge to capture the essence of the journey prompted me to instruct the driver to halt at the outskirts of Chitkul. A famed photo destination, marked by a sign proudly proclaiming it as the last village of India before the China border, it beckoned as a symbol of the unique frontier experience. Stopping the car, I stepped out into the crisp mountain air, greeted by the breathtaking panorama. Before the wheels even touched the Chitkul terrain, preparations for a cozy retreat were set in motion. A conversation with a cab driver in Reckong Peo had led me to the doorstep of Himalayan Tribe Hostel and Cafe, a homestay that promised not just shelter but an experience steeped in local warmth. Upon arrival, the owner, a gracious host, welcomed me with the charm of the mountains. A casual chat about prices turned into a delightful agreement – “Just come, and we’ll settle it later.” A gesture that resonated with the spirit of Chitkul, where time moves a bit slower, and trust is a currency in abundance. Stepping into the homestay, a few rooms were presented, each offering its own charm.

Satiated with a quick feast of maggi and soup, the melodies of the river summoned me. Its rhythmic flow, echoing through the village, had already woven a symphony in my heart. The snowy landscape, a canvas of tranquility, beckoned, and I couldn’t resist the allure of its pristine beauty. Armed with my essentials – camera, a compact tripod, and a speaker to add a soundtrack to nature’s own melody – I embarked on a journey behind the homestay. On my way back, the tantalizing aroma from a local gem, “Hindustan Ka Aakhri Dhaba,” beckoned, promising a rendezvous with heavenly rajma chawal. The eatery, adorned with photographs of celebrities and notable personalities, spoke volumes about its reputation in this quaint Himalayan village. The owner, a vibrant soul, turned a simple meal into a delightful experience with his lively conversations. The tales he shared, intertwined with the hum of satisfied customers, added a unique flavor to the evening. As I relished the warmth of rajma chawal, the pictures on the wall bore witness to the Dhaba’s charm that had transcended local boundaries. With a satisfied appetite, I retraced my steps to the homestay. The azure sky, now donning darker shades, hinted at the approaching night. The colder waves, sweeping through the mountains, pierced the stillness, urging a retreat indoors. Day 2 - Delving into Local Charms and Immersing in Village Life

Day 2 in Chitkul marked the final chapter of this enchanting journey, though not the end of the Himalayan adventure. The morning brought with it an unexpected challenge – the water in the washroom had transformed into a solid block of ice. Breaking through the icy cover, the freezing cold water left me momentarily breathless, a daring adventure in its own right. With a heart still racing from the icy encounter, I ventured out into the village to explore the unhurried rhythm of local life. The sun bathed the village in a warm glow, painting a tranquil scene around 10 AM. People engaged in their daily routines – women tending to chores, men immersed in various tasks, and animals grazing leisurely in the fresh morning air.

The slow pace of village life captured my heart, offering a stark contrast to the bustling world left behind. It was a sunny day, and the authenticity of the moment unfolded as women washed clothes by the river, men toiled on their tasks, and the older generation basked in the warmth of the morning sun. Despite the chilling start, the day promised a rainbow of heartwarming moments and an immersion into the soulful simplicity of Chitkul’s local life. The journey continued, each step resonating with the charm of my two days in Chitkul.

As I reached a quaint temple, I stumbled upon a scene that encapsulated the essence of Chitkul – two adorable kids, a brother and sister, engrossed in the simplicity of life. Their laughter echoed as they attempted to pluck berries from a shrubby tree. Intrigued, I walked over, and they eagerly enlisted my help in their berry-gathering mission. After our joint venture, we found a cozy spot to sit and indulge in heartwarming conversation. The boy, now holding my phone with the confidence of a seasoned photographer, framed shots as if crafting a masterpiece. Meanwhile, the girl animatedly shared her world – tales of home, school, friends, and cherished games. In that serene setting, amidst the backdrop of the temple and the Himalayan landscape, the innocence of their laughter and the genuine exchange of stories became a testament to the beauty of human connection. It was a moment frozen in time, a snapshot of the joyous encounters; their innocence touched my heart.

With a heavy heart filled with memories, I ventured to the small wooden building that housed the post office, a glimpse into a bygone era. Sadly, the door remained shut, denying me entry into the time-frozen space. Returning to the homestay, it was time to bid adieu to this heavenly beauty. As I packed my bag, the owner extended warm wishes for my safe journey, adding a touch of genuine hospitality to the farewell. With a plan to spend the night in Sangla, I set out on the next leg of my adventure. Before leaving, I made a pit stop at the dhaba, indulging in another plate of delicious rajma rice. The flavors lingered as I savored each bite, a final taste of Chitkul’s culinary charm. As the bus arrived, I reluctantly left behind the footprints and memories woven into the fabric of those enchanting two days in Chitkul.
