How to Spend a Day in Pushkar – A Guide to Rajasthan’s Most Enchanting City

I had been thinking of visiting Pushkar for a long time. Usually, it happens during the famous Pushkar Camel Fair when the newspapers and social media get colored with the colors of this place’s culture. And this finally happened during the Pushkar Fair of 2022. Yes, it took me almost 4 years to visit this land of spiritual wonders.

So, I had no idea what to do in one day in Pushkar since it was my first time visiting this city. Moreover, I was visiting Pushkar to visit its cattle fair, so there wasn’t much on my mind. My plan was to just visit the fair and roam in and around the city for a while. This sounds boring, right? Well, I usually travel unplanned. And at times, these unplanned travels have turned out to be the most memorable ones. But there’s always a risk, a risk of traveling without any itinerary and ending up spending more than the expected budget and not being able to visit some good places.

Pushkar was a cultural shock for me. Yeah, you heard it right. I thought Pushkar was all about temples and religious affairs.

I found lots of foreigners in Pushkar, especially Hebrew-speaking people. I questioned myself, “Is Pushkar the Mini Varanasi of Rajasthan as it has lots of Ghats or is Pushkar the mini Israel of Rajasthan as there were Israeli people roaming in the streets.” Well, you must have heard that Kasol is called the mini Israel of India. However, to my surprise, Pushkar has a similar vibe. The hippie culture and lots of Israeli cafes with Hebrew language made me realize this. My one day in Pushkar was spent in just awe and surprise as I was visiting lots of cafes catering largely to foreign tourists (Israelis to be specific).

How to Reach Pushkar from Delhi

Pushkar is a well connected city. The closest railway station is Ajmer Railway Station which is almost 15 KM away from Pushkar. Moreover, you can take direct buses to Pushkar. I took a local bus to Pushkar from IFFCO Chowk, Gurgaon. The ticket cost was ~ 400 INR. There was Volvo other bus services to Pushkar from Delhi or Gurgaon. You can catch a bus to Pushkar from ISBT or as per the service provider. It takes nearly 8 hours from Delhi to reach Pushkar. So, you can sleep in the bus and the next day, you will find yourself surrounded by the Aravali range hills.

Things to Do in Pushkar in One Day – A One-Day Adventure in Rajasthan’s Holy City

Pushkar is a tranquil town in the Indian state of Rajasthan, about 15 km (9.3 mi) from Ajmer. This place is famous for its rich culture, interesting history and the holy Pushkar Lake. It’s also home to one of the rarest Brahma temples in India, which is why thousands (or maybe even millions) of Hindu devotees flock to this town every year.

Pushkar Lake: The holy Pushkar Lake (or Pushkar Sarovar) is located right in the center of the town and it’s sacred to Hindus. It’s believed that bathing in this lake will wash your sins away and cure skin diseases. According to the legend, Pushkar Lake was formed when Lord Brahma vanquished the demon Vajranash with a lotus flower. The flower then fell to the ground and created the Lake. This is a very peaceful place and one of the best things to do in Pushkar is to relax at Sunset Point, which is located East of Pushkar Lake.
Ghats: You will find 52 bathing ghats surrounding Pushkar Lake and I would recommend visiting them all – that’s right, every single one of them! Don’t worry, though, this doesn’t take as long as you may think. Strolling along the ghats was one of my favorite things to do in Pushkar. You will find people performing rituals and offering flowers to the lake here.
Brahma Temple: This temple is one of the few temples that’s dedicated to Brahma, the Hindu god of creation, which makes it a very important place for devotees of Hinduism. Brahma is one of the three main gods in Hinduism, together with Shiva and Vishnu.

Activities to do in Pushkar in One Day

In addition to visiting the holy sites in Pushkar, there are many other activities to do in this charming town. One popular activity is going on a camel safari. This is a great way to see the town and its surroundings from a different perspective. You can ride through the desert and see the local wildlife and vegetation.

Another exciting activity to do in Pushkar is going on a hot air balloon ride. This is a unique and thrilling way to see the town from above. You can soar over the desert and see the town and its surroundings from a bird’s eye view.

If you’re interested in hiking, there are several trails in the surrounding hills that offer stunning views of the town and its surroundings. You can hike to the top of one of the hills and see the town and its surroundings from a different perspective.

This is how you can plan a one day itinerary for Pushkar. However, you can even consider spending two days to deeply dive into the ambience of this place. I spent one night and two days in this city during the fair. I visited the cattle fair in November on both days.
