Fateh Sagar Lake, located in the picturesque city of Udaipur in Rajasthan, is an artificial marvel constructed in the 1680s under the reign of Maharana Fateh Singh of Udaipur. Situated to the northwest of the city, just north of the famous Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar is one of the four major lakes of Udaipur, each contributing to the city’s distinct charm. The other three are Lake Pichola, which lies within the town, Udai Sagar Lake, situated 13 kilometers east, and Dhebar Lake (or Jaisamand Lake), located 52 kilometers southeast of Udaipur.
The lake is home to three small islands, each adding to its allure. The largest, Nehru Park, covers an area of 4 km² and serves as a popular tourist spot. Visitors can take motor boat rides to this tranquil park, surrounded by lush greenery. The second island, covering 0.06 km², features a public park and a spectacular water-jet fountain, offering an excellent spot for relaxation. The third island, spanning 1.2 km², is home to the Udaipur Solar Observatory, one of the best solar observing sites in Asia.
Known for its crystal-clear blue waters set against the backdrop of the Aravalli Mountains, Fateh Sagar Lake has earned Udaipur the title “The Second Kashmir.” Beyond its beauty, the lake plays a vital role in the city’s ecosystem. Reports from the Udaipur Lake Conservation Society highlight the lake’s importance in groundwater recharge, providing drinking water, agricultural support, and ecological stability. Additionally, it plays a key role in sustaining local industries and providing employment to a significant portion of Udaipur’s population.
